Fed Within Half an Hour
Families travelling with children have a limited window before somebody melts down, so the whole operation is built for speed without cutting corners. Chicken roasts continuously on the spit so a portion is ready immediately; grilled dishes take twelve minutes; children's plates are served first as a rule rather than as a favour; and drinks and bread arrive within two minutes of sitting down. A table of four eats and pays comfortably inside forty minutes, and nobody is left waiting because the kitchen prioritised a large group that arrived later.
Children Taken Seriously
Children's portions are smaller versions of the real food rather than a separate menu of frozen shapes: roast chicken with potatoes, broth with pasta, grilled vegetables, fruit. High chairs are cleaned between every use, there are changing facilities in both washrooms rather than only the women's, and every diner has a shaded playground within sight of the terrace so that parents can finish a coffee. Plates for children arrive at a temperature they can eat immediately, which sounds obvious and rarely happens.
Shade That Actually Works
A terrace in full sun at two in the afternoon is unusable no matter how good the food is. Ours are covered with vine, reed or solid canopy, oriented against the midday sun, fitted with fans where the air is still, and sized so that every table has shade for the whole lunch service rather than the first hour. Water is brought to the table without being asked and refilled without being charged for. There is always an indoor room with air conditioning for the hottest days.
Parking for What People Drive
Holiday routes are full of caravans, campervans, roof boxes and cars towing trailers, none of which fit in a standard bay. Every diner has oversized spaces, a turning area that does not require reversing onto the road, shaded parking where the site allows it, and space to leave a caravan hitched. Two sites have a water point and a waste disposal for campervans. Dogs are welcome on all the terraces, with water bowls and a shaded corner provided as standard.
Real Food, Local Suppliers
Chicken comes from farms within the region and is delivered fresh several times a week; vegetables, bread, cheese and fruit are bought locally and change with the season. Nothing is bought in ready-prepared, sauces and desserts are made in each kitchen, and the wine and beer lists are short and regional. Suppliers are named on the menu. It costs more than the wholesale alternative and it is the reason a meal here tastes different from the identical-looking plate at the next junction.
Honest Prices on a Tourist Road
Prices are the same in August as in May, printed on a board outside so nobody has to sit down to discover them, and set at the level a local family would pay rather than at what a tourist can be persuaded to accept. Bread, water and the playground are free. There is a fixed-price lunch every weekday that includes a main course, a side, bread and water. Card payment is accepted everywhere, and the bill is itemised without being asked.
